Different trailer types have different advantages and disadvantages. Even two trailers of the same type may have differing characteristics that make them more or less suitable for your needs. That’s why it’s so important that you do your research before you buy a trailer. Luckily, the experts at Flying A Motorsports have created this useful buying guide to help you get started.

Decide Whether You Want a General or Specialized Trailer

Most trailers fit into one of two broad categories: general or specialized. Examples of general trailers include enclosed trailers and utility trailers. These trailers work well for general cargo hauling purposes. Meanwhile, specialized trailers like dump trailers or car haulers are made to complete more specific tasks. While these trailers will excel at the task they are designed for, they might not work as well if you try to use them for other purposes.  That’s why you should figure out how you plan to use your trailer before you start shopping.

Decide the Hitch Style

While there are many different hitch styles, two of the most common are bumper pull and gooseneck hitches. Bumper pull hitches are great because they are affordable and fully compatible with a range of possible tow vehicles. Gooseneck hitches offer a smooth towing experience, but are only compatible with tow vehicles that have a truck bed, which can be limiting.

Consider Your Tow Vehicle

Another important factor to consider is which tow vehicle you plan to use. Bear in mind that the trailer contributes to the vehicle’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which is the upper limit of how much weight it can safely tow. A heavier trailer can put a limit on how much you are able to haul at one time, especially if your vehicle’s GVWR is low.
