Trailers make it easy to transport things from place to place, but which trailer type is right for you? Trailers range from the general to the highly specialized, and it’s not always obvious which trailer type is right for your needs. This guide from Flying A Motorsports can help you figure out what kind of trailer is right for your needs.

General or Specialized?

Most trailers can be broadly classified as either general or specific. General trailers such as utility trailers can be used for jobs of many different kinds. They are fairly basic in terms of features, which makes them affordable, easy to maintain, and versatile. Specialized trailers, on the other hand, are designed for more specific tasks. For example, a dump trailer isn’t much better at transporting furniture than a utility or cargo trailer, but dump trailer are much better for transporting loose materials since they can much more easily dump the materials when they reach the intended destination.

Decide the Hitch Style

Hitch style is also important. There are a few different trailer hitch options, each with benefits and drawbacks. Gooseneck hitches, for example, offer a very smooth towing experience but require a tow vehicle that has a truck bed. Bumper pull hitches don’t offer as smooth a towing experience, but they are highly affordable and are compatible with a much wider variety of tow vehicles.

Consider Your Tow Vehicle

Speaking of your tow vehicle, you may need to factor it into your trailer buying decision as well. Your vehicle’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) tells you how much your tow vehicle can safely haul. If your vehicle’s GVWR is too low, it may limit how much you can safely haul. If your intended tow vehicle isn’t powerful enough, consider buying a lighter trailer or finding a better tow vehicle.
